Madeline Roberts won an INCOSE Junior Award which comes with a $150 and a certificate which will be presented at our March luncheon tentatively march 6th at the Rivers Edge. Madeline‘s project “Driving Into A New Generation” dealt with Comparison of differing blade pitches for the generation of electric power at differing air velocities. Madeline goes to Spring Ridge Middle School. She also won a 3rd place in the category Engineering: Energy and Transportation. It is not known if she will continue on to the Prince Georges Area Science Fair March 16-18.
I wish I could have gotten a picture of Madeline at her project. It was good to see that Madeline was able to use a wind tunnel at PAX River NAS. She both understood and was able to exploit the test precision the opportunity provided her. A lot of Science Fair projects have counter intuitive results just because of crude tests setups. Since Engineering and Scientific discovery is one of the goals of the fair it was good to see the local community giving the best opportunities it can offer.
Very thorough and comprehensive presentation in aerodynamics of different blade designs. Awesome that when the student built wind tunnel, operated via “leaf blower” technologies was providing inconsistent data, that the student had a suitable upgrade in test equipment!
